Lagan ranks numero uno in sports based movies. Starring Amir Khan as Bhuvan, a villager, this is a movie about how he organizes a team of rookie villagers to play a cricket match against the English Team of Officers who are ruling his village Champaran. With a win granting the villagers freedom from paying taxes this match become more than cricket to them. It’s their battle for once pride and self esteem against the British Rule.
2. Chak De India
The movie is based on the sorry state of our National Sports Hockey in general and women’s hockey in particular. Shahrukh Khan plays a hockey coach Kabir Khan who puts life in a demotivated women’s hockey team to make them world champions. It is also his personal fight against the humiliation he faces when he is held responsible for loss to Pakistan in World Cup finals and labeled a Traitor.
3. Iqbal
The movie depict the struggle of a hearing impaired village boy Iqbaal (Shreyas Talpade) who into the Indian Cricket Team. Undeterred by the opposition of his father, his passion and determination for the sport coupled with coaching from Nasseruddin Shah and support from his mother and sister he realizes his dream of playing for India.
4 Goal:
With Football as the theme the movie depicts the problem of racism that Indians and other Asians face in European Countries. A story about how Asian football players struggle to save the existence of their football Club South Hall United by winning a football league that has the best European football clubs, this is their own way to fight for their self esteem though the sport . The movie has John Abraham and Arshad Warsi as football players.
